If dogs pee on the floors or a cat creates a mess, it’s going to leave a stain if you do not clean it right away. If you live in a house with children who haven’t been potty-trained, you might also have to deal with urine stains every now and then.
It’s going to be difficult for you to get rid of urine stains if you don’t know what agent you have to use. If you do not take care of urine right away, the smell it releases is going to be incredibly unpleasant, and the stains will generally be quite stubborn.
That is one of the main reasons why you need to wipe the stains as quickly as possible. More importantly, you should know that if the mess was created by a dog or a cat, you will have to use an enzymatic cleaner or vinegar to completely get rid of the smell.
You might not smell it, but cats and dogs will, and they will want to go in the same spot again. As you can understand, that’s a terrible thing, and it’s going to result in a major mess around your house.
That is why you need to take appropriate steps to remove urine stains from the bathroom floors as quickly as possible. In the following paragraphs, we will talk about four important methods that you can use to get rid of the urine stains from your floors.
How To Remove Urine Stains From Bathroom Floor
- Dishwashing Liquid, Baking Soda, and Vinegar
One of the most efficient ways to remove the pungent smells and the stubborn stains from your bathroom floors is to make use of a series of products that are commonly found around the house.
When you combine vinegar with the basic properties in baking soda, and then add a bit of dishwashing liquid for its stain removal qualities, you have an ideal solution on your hands.
This solution can be used on a variety of different surfaces, including vinyl flooring, laminate, linoleum, ceramic tile, porcelain, and stone tile.
Keep in mind that you are going to need a few things for this: rubber gloves, a bucket, baking soda, dishwashing detergent or liquid, towels, white vinegar (preferably distilled), and a scrub brush. Keep trash bags handy as well.
To remove the stains, you need to first soak up the urine. Put on the gloves, and then place some paper towels on the urine to soak it up.
A common mistake that many people make is that they tend to just throw the paper towels down the toilet, but that’s a bad idea. It could cause the toilet to clog up as well. Instead, just put them in the trash bag.
Then, you need to pour at least half a cup of vinegar and three tablespoons of liquid dish soap into the bucket. Fill it up with hot water and then apply the solution generously on the floor.
Use a mop or a cleaning cloth to rub on the area with care to ensure that the area has been properly cleaned. Once you are done, you need to refill your bucket with hot water, and then apply it on the area all over.
It’s important that you use a few dry towels to dry the area. Once you are done, mix three parts baking soda and one part water, and then apply it on the stain as well. You will want to let the paste sit for at least 12 hours.
It’s best to leave it overnight to let the baking soda work its magic. The baking soda is going to essentially absorb the stain from the surface. In the morning, just wipe it off and see if the stain is removed.
If the urine stain has been present for a long time, it’s going to be more difficult to get rid of. Thankfully, the process is still the same: just apply the baking soda on it and leave it for another 12 hours. You will see the difference in the morning!
- White Vinegar and Grapefruit Oil
Most people don’t know this, but grapefruit oil is an incredibly potent stain remover that’s made from all-natural materials. It also has antibacterial properties, making it an excellent choice for getting rid of urine stains.
When you combine this with vinegar, you can easily get rid of the stains from the bathroom floor within a few minutes.
That’s not all; it’s also quite versatile, and can be used on a range of different floors, including porcelain, hardwood, ceramic tile, laminate, and vinyl. For this method to work, you are going to need a mop, some grapefruit oil and white vinegar, and garbage bags.
You will also need microfiber cloths (preferably ones that you intend to discard), along with paper towels. As always, you need to start by soaking up the urine on the floor.
Once the paper towels have done their job, you can just chuck them in the garbage bags. Now, fill a bucket with hot water, then add at least 10 drops of grapefruit oil in the mix.
On top of that, add another half cup of white vinegar in the mix. Then, apply the mixture generously on the affected area, and use a scrubbing glove or pad to get rid of the stain.
If the stain is spread over a larger area, it might be a wise idea to let it sit for at least 5 to 10 minutes. This is going to help reduce the intensity of the stain before you wipe it off.
Once the period has elapsed, just use a mop or a towel to wipe it off. You will notice that the stain will have been removed permanently. If not, you can just repeat the process in its entirety again.
- Hydrogen Peroxide, Dish Soap, and Baking Soda
This is easily one of the most effective solutions for removing stains. It helps in not just getting rid of urine stains, but can also help you remove other stains from the bathroom floor.
It can also be used on different kinds of surfaces, including linoleum, vinyl, laminate, and even porcelain. To use this method, you are going to need the three ingredients, along with other cleaning materials such as rubber gloves, trash bags, paper towels, and a mop.
As usual, start with soaking the urine using paper towels, and then throw those into the trash bags. Then, create a mixture of warm water with a teaspoon of baking soda.
Use at least a quarter cup of hydrogen peroxide to add into the mixture. Hydrogen peroxide is incredibly strong, and it shouldn’t take long for the stain to be removed.
Once the stain has been lifted, you can use a conventional all-purpose cleaner and apply it on the surface. Ideally, it’s recommended that you use an enzymatic cleaner because those will also remove any kind of pet odors from the mix.
However, if, even after doing all of this, the stain is still present, you might want to mix a couple of tablespoons of dish soap with hydrogen peroxide, and then rub it on the stained surface directly.
Leave it there for at least a half hour, and then clean it up. See if the stain has been removed altogether. If not, you might want to repeat the process again.
- Employ an Enzymatic Cleaner
If you don’t want to go through the hassle of mixing all of these substances, you can just buy an enzymatic cleaner and use that.
The reason why urine stains are slightly more difficult to remove as compared to other stains is because they contain crystals of uric acid that tightly stick to the surface.
However, with an enzymatic cleaner, you can remove those because the crystals dissolve directly into the mix. If you need to quickly clean a few spots from your bathroom floor, this is just what you are going to need.
Make sure you buy a high-end enzyme cleaner. If you are ordering online, just read a few reviews to figure out whether the product is good or not.
To use it, you need to first soak the urine stain. Use the paper towels before getting rid of them, and then spray the enzymatic cleaner on the affected area. It’s best to follow the instructions given on the back of the cleaning bottle.
Some cleaners require you to wait around five minutes, whereas others may require you to let the enzyme cleaner sit for at least a half hour.
After the solution has been sitting for the stipulated period of time, use a sponge or some paper towels to get rid of it. The stain might be permanently removed, or you may have to apply it at least twice to get it out. These are just a few tips for permanently getting rid of the stain.
